Description
In the aftermath of a devastating storm, the protective crystals used by the mages have been shattered and scattered, leaving the Sacred Grove devoid of its former power. You are summoned to embark on a mission to locate and restore these crystals before the next storm threatens the world. As you begin your journey, it becomes evident that the task is more complex than it initially appears.
Immersive Open World VR Experience
RuneSage is a Virtual Reality role-playing adventure game designed for both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift & Touch. Players take on the role of a sage of modest origins, exploring a vast open world filled with magical elements and natural runes. Your goal is to discover these runes and use them to cast spells that help solve puzzles and progress through your quest. The game offers extensive exploration opportunities, including dense forests with wildlife, expansive lakes to cross by boat, dark ancient caves, and ruined castles with dungeons patrolled by circling vultures.
Exploration and Questing
Players can spend 10-15 hours exploring a rich, detailed environment with over 40 quests focused on finding the missing crystals. The game emphasizes discovery and interaction rather than combat; there are no monsters to fight, and danger is minimal. RuneSage is structured as a gentle, immersive scavenger hunt for those interested in uncovering secrets at their own pace.
Runes and Spellcasting
At the core of RuneSage are runes and spells. Runes represent natural forces such as wind, water, and fire, and players encounter them throughout the world. Spells are formed by tracing rune shapes with hand movements, channeling the elemental power into tangible effects. Players can combine runes to create advanced spell effects, such as directing a stream of water using both wind and water runes. Mastering these combinations is essential for solving environmental puzzles and retrieving the lost crystals.
VR-Specific Design and Movement Options
RuneSage has been developed specifically for Virtual Reality, offering comprehensive support for both major VR platforms. The game provides a variety of locomotion methods to accommodate different play spaces and preferences:
- Room-scale VR: Explore short distances by physically moving within the play area.
- Teleportation: Activate a magical beam using the controller to move instantly to a chosen location, available in left or right-handed variants.
- Dash Teleport: Move in a straight line toward a target with configurable speed and duration.
- Trackpad/Thumbstick Movement: Twelve variants allow forward, backward, and strafing movement, with configurable speed and directional control via headset or hand orientation.
- Armswing Locomotion: Simulate jogging by swinging your arms to move, with configurable speed and directional options.
Rotation and Navigation
For smaller spaces or seated play, RuneSage offers several rotation methods:
- Free Rotate: Rotate the view by moving the controllers while holding the grip button.
- Walkabout: Freeze the game world while physically turning, then continue in the same virtual direction.
- Roomscale: Turn in the game world by physically rotating without additional input.
Rune Drawing and Spell Casting
Players draw runes using hand gestures. Pressing the rear trigger begins the drawing process, and releasing it completes the rune shape. To cast spells, trace one or more runes, then extend your hand and release the trigger to activate the spell. Projectile spells are influenced by the speed and direction of the hand movement when casting.
Options and Customization
The options menu, accessed via the menu button on either controller, allows full customization of movement styles, speed settings, and control configurations, providing a personalized VR experience. Players can adapt RuneSage to their preferred exploration style, ensuring comfort and accessibility while fully immersing themselves in the magical world.
World and Collectibles
The game features 20 distinct biomes with over 50 collectible items. Interacting with non-player characters reveals new quests and helps guide the player toward the missing crystals. Casting over 35 unique spells and experimenting with rune combinations forms the core gameplay, requiring observation, problem-solving, and understanding of the natural elements within the game world.
RuneSage is designed as a VR adventure for players who enjoy immersive exploration, thoughtful puzzle-solving, and the discovery of magical secrets at a relaxed pace, offering one of the longest and most detailed open-world VR experiences available.
