Description
Richman: Classic (2022) is a collection of three distinct titles from the renowned Richman series: Richman, Richman 2, and Richman 3. Originating in 1989, the series initially adapted the popular board game into a computer game format, marking the debut of the first Richman installment. Over the following decades, the series became a widely recognized casual game within Chinese-speaking regions.
Richman (First Edition)
The first edition features black-and-white graphics and gameplay closely aligned with the original board game. Players move characters across a city map by rolling dice, aiming to acquire as much real estate as possible to achieve the highest score. Players have the option to purchase any land they land on to grow their assets. Additionally, the game includes financial investment mechanics such as stocks and futures trading. The game’s map is based on Taipei City, and players can select from eight unique characters, including the iconic character "Atubu."
Richman 2
Richman 2 expands on its predecessor by introducing card items that trigger various effects, as well as deity characters that randomly attach to players to influence gains or losses. The game also incorporates mini gambling events throughout the maps.
Game Modes
Single-Player Mode: Players control Atuzai, the grandson of the original Atubu, navigating challenges across three locations: Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Richman City. Success in all areas is required to reach the ending sequence.
Multiplayer Mode: Players may choose any of the three regions and select from seven additional characters besides Atuzai. This installment introduces series staples such as Sun Xiaomei and Qian Furen for the first time.
Richman 3
Richman 3 maintains both single-player and multiplayer modes, offering expanded gameplay mechanics and a larger roster of characters.
Single-Player Mode
Players select a character and must complete challenges across all three maps to reach the ending sequence.
Multiplayer Mode
Up to six characters can participate in a single game. If fewer than four human players are present, the computer will fill in to ensure a minimum of four participants. Returning characters include Sun Xiaomei, Qian Furen, and Atubu/Atuzai, along with nine new characters: Jennifer, Takako Ishibashi, Margaret, Lin Jiaojiao, Jin Kaizi, Andre, Brad, Danny, and Shalumbus. Each character has unique dialogue and expressive animations reflecting emotions such as joy, anger, sadness, and excitement.
Deity System
The game expands on the deity system introduced in Richman 2, adding two new deities and differentiating the existing four by size, which affects the likelihood of their influence activating:
- Fortune God: Grants a card upon possession; all property investments automatically gain a house, and all random events benefit the player.
- Wealth God: Provides four-digit cash and eliminates all fees and monetary losses from events.
- Misfortune God: Removes cards from the player; all property investments are invalid, and random events are detrimental.
- Poverty God: Forces the player to pay three-digit cash to all other players; all subsequent monetary losses, including fees, are doubled.
- Angel: Adds a house to any property when passing by or paying fees.
- Devil: Removes a house from any property when passing by or paying fees.
Special NPC Characters
Richman 3 introduces four non-playable characters that interact with players dynamically:
- Police Officer: Issues a fine of 3,000 when encountered, or tows the player’s vehicle if traveling by car.
- Thug: Extorts 10% of the player's cash upon encounter.
- Vicious Dog: Injures the player, requiring a three-day hospital stay, or can be run over if the player uses a vehicle.
- Beggar: Appears when a player goes bankrupt; the first player to encounter must give 1,000 units of currency, after which the beggar disappears.
Item System
Richman 3 introduces an item system for the first time in the series. Players can purchase items from a store using game credits, including timed bombs, missiles, robot dolls, remote dice, roadblocks, cars, motorcycles, and mines. Proper use of these items significantly influences the rate at which players accumulate wealth.
Card System
The card system in Richman 3 has been revised compared to Richman 2. Players can no longer buy cards with money; instead, cards are obtained exclusively through game credits.
Lost-and-Found Feature
A dedicated lost-and-found area returns money lost due to various in-game events. Players automatically collect accumulated losses when passing through this location. If unvisited, the total continues to increase, sometimes becoming a critical factor for reversing fortunes during gameplay.
