LUXOR The Wrath of Set (2010)
Description
LUXOR The Wrath of Set is a puzzle game in which players must prevent a continuous stream of colored spheres from reaching the end of a designated path. The balls are propelled forward by a scarab, and the player controls a shooter positioned at the bottom of the screen to launch additional spheres. The main objective is to strategically match three or more spheres of the same color to eliminate them from the advancing chain.
Gameplay Mechanics
The player fires spheres into the moving chain, and upon impact, the sphere enters the chain at that location. If the newly placed sphere creates a group of three or more contiguous spheres of the same color, all spheres in that group are destroyed, which can trigger chain reactions. Failure to remove the spheres in time results in the chain reaching the pyramid at the end of the path, costing the player a life and requiring the level to be restarted. Success is achieved by completely clearing the chain before it reaches the pyramid.
Game Modes
The game offers multiple modes for different play experiences. In Story Mode, the player progresses through a journey along the Nile, advancing through Egypt stage by stage. Each stage contains multiple levels, and the player must successfully complete each level to unlock subsequent ones. This mode provides a structured progression, gradually increasing in difficulty and complexity.
Endless Tomb Mode allows players to engage in individual levels without following the Story Mode sequence. However, in a new game, only the initial levels of Story Mode are immediately available. Remaining levels must first be unlocked by completing stages within Story Mode, adding an element of progression and replayability.
Strategic Elements
Players must carefully plan shots to create effective combinations and manage the speed of the advancing chain. Timing and precision are critical, as poorly aimed spheres may not contribute to matching sets and can result in the chain reaching the pyramid too quickly. Advanced play involves anticipating chain movements and triggering cascading destructions of multiple sphere groups in a single shot.
Visual and Thematic Design
LUXOR The Wrath of Set features Egyptian-inspired visuals, with a path leading to a pyramid and thematic elements that reinforce the setting along the Nile. The movement of the scarab and the arrangement of spheres provide clear visual cues to help players plan their actions. The game’s interface is designed for intuitive control of the shooter, allowing precise aiming and quick reactions to the advancing chain.
Summary
In summary, LUXOR The Wrath of Set combines fast-paced puzzle-solving with strategic planning. Players must eliminate chains of colored spheres before they reach the pyramid, using accurate shots and color-matching tactics. Story Mode guides players through Egypt across multiple stages and levels, while Endless Tomb Mode provides opportunities for focused, individual level challenges. Progression is tied to performance, with later levels unlocked by successfully completing earlier stages, ensuring a structured and engaging gameplay experience for puzzle enthusiasts.
Our Verdict
Not Recommended. While LUXOR™ Wrath of Set offers an enjoyable match-3 gameplay experience, it feels outdated and repetitive. The mechanics are simple, but the lack of variety and challenge quickly makes the game feel like a grind. The levels get monotonous, and despite its Egyptian theme, the visuals and sound don't do enough to keep you engaged for long stretches. While it might appeal to fans of the genre or those looking for a casual distraction, there are better options available that offer more depth and excitement.
In short, unless you're a die-hard fan of similar puzzle games, LUXOR™ Wrath of Set is unlikely to leave a lasting impression. The game doesn't innovate or provide much new, making it hard to recommend over other, more polished titles in the genre.
