Description
Setting
The game unfolds in the present-day Manhattan Peninsula of New York, rendered with meticulous detail. The city is in chaos as an unusual mutation sweeps through the population, transforming ordinary citizens into aggressive, bloodthirsty creatures. The environment reflects the scale of the outbreak, with streets, buildings, and landmarks providing a realistic backdrop to the catastrophic events.
Main Character
Players take control of Alex Mercer, an apparently ordinary young man who awakens with no memory of his past or knowledge of his extraordinary abilities. Despite his lack of self-awareness, Alex possesses powers that will be crucial for survival and for navigating the dangers of a city under siege by mutants, the military, police, and mercenary forces. His journey revolves around uncovering his identity while combating the epidemic and evading multiple hostile factions.
Plot
Alex awakens in the morgue of Ghentec's Manhattan headquarters. His sudden awakening coincides with an assault by Blackwatch mercenaries attempting to break into the facility. Initially disoriented, Alex attempts to flee the attackers. During this escape, he discovers his superhuman abilities, which include immunity to gunfire, enhanced jumping, the ability to hurl heavy objects, and the capacity to run along building walls. A central feature of his power set is "absorption," allowing him to assimilate individuals, assume their appearance, and acquire their knowledge and memories. This mechanic provides critical story developments, such as learning personal information about his own life.
Through interactions and absorption, Alex uncovers that he has a sister. Speaking with her directly, he learns that he was a key employee at Ghentec, engaged in research and handling of biological weapons. As the narrative progresses, Alex becomes a target for multiple groups: the military and police blame him for the viral outbreak, while Blackwatch pursues him for separate motives. Using his expanding range of abilities, Alex combats mutants, hostile human forces, and other threats. Among his powers is the capacity to transform his body into various forms, including weapons, shields, and armor, significantly enhancing his combat potential.
Gameplay
The entire Manhattan area is fully accessible from the start, allowing players to explore the city freely. Story missions guide the main narrative, while side missions offer additional challenges. Alex’s superhuman abilities enable vertical and horizontal mobility across the urban landscape. Unlike insects, he runs along walls, and falling from great heights is non-lethal, providing strategic opportunities to attack enemies from above.
Combat relies heavily on Alex’s shapeshifting capabilities. His limbs can morph into powerful melee weapons such as sledgehammers, blades, whips, and defensive shields. He can temporarily expand his muscles to enhance strength and transform his skin into protective armor. Additional senses, such as night vision and the ability to distinguish mutants from humans, further support tactical gameplay. Abilities improve progressively as the player completes missions and objectives.
In addition to innate powers, Alex can utilize conventional weaponry, including assault rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers, and rocket launchers. He can also commandeer military vehicles, tanks, and helicopters, using their mounted weaponry to confront large groups of enemies or to traverse the city efficiently. The combination of melee transformation abilities, firearms, and vehicle combat provides a diverse gameplay experience with multiple strategies for approaching each scenario.
Abilities and Progression
Alex’s powers expand as the story unfolds. Each ability can be upgraded, increasing effectiveness in combat, mobility, and survival. Transformations of his body enhance both offensive and defensive options, allowing him to tailor his approach to specific enemies or situations. The game emphasizes flexibility in how players navigate the open-world environment and confront both human and mutant adversaries. The combination of exploration, superhuman abilities, and interaction with the city’s population defines the core gameplay loop.
Our Verdict
Prototype offers a unique and chaotic experience, with an open-world setting in a mutated New York City. The protagonist, Alex Mercer, is armed with incredible powers that let you run on walls, absorb enemies, and transform your body into deadly weapons. The gameplay is fast-paced and filled with action, making it an exciting ride for those who enjoy combat-heavy games. The ability to freely explore Manhattan and tackle missions at your own pace is a nice touch, though it can sometimes feel repetitive. The story, while intriguing, may not be groundbreaking, but it keeps you engaged enough to push forward.
However, while the powers and abilities are fun to use, the game’s design can feel a bit clunky at times. The combat can become monotonous, and the storyline, while interesting, doesn’t deliver any major surprises. Overall, if you’re a fan of open-world action games with superhuman abilities, Prototype is definitely worth checking out. But if you're expecting something truly revolutionary, you might find it lacking in depth. In the end, Prototype is an enjoyable, if imperfect, experience.
