Arcade Hits: Sonic Wings Special (2010)
Description
Experience a classic shooter from a golden era of Japanese shoot ‘em-ups with Sonic Wings Special, now available as a PS one® Classic. This game is accessible on both PS3™ and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems, bringing a fast-paced, action-packed adventure to your fingertips. The game is a direct import from Japan and can be downloaded today for endless hours of entertainment.
Gameplay and Features
Sonic Wings Special brings together elements from the previous installments (I-III) in the series. It offers an exciting vertical scrolling gameplay experience, where players engage in high-speed aerial combat. The game features a choice of multiple jet fighters, adding variety and replayability to the game. You can pick from seven distinct teams and fourteen unique pilots, each with their own specialized jets. There are a total of 26 different aircraft to choose from, allowing players to customize their experience based on their preferred playstyle.
The characters and pilots are beautifully rendered in anime-style graphics, giving each captain a distinct personality and making it feel like you’re flying alongside a co-pilot. This is especially true for characters like Captain Blaster Keaton, who faces off against the formidable Fat Morgana in intense dogfights. With 17 stages to play through, you’ll encounter numerous paths that you can take to complete each mission. Some stages are randomly generated, adding an element of unpredictability to the gameplay, ensuring that no two sessions are ever the same.
Multiplayer and Play Modes
Sonic Wings Special supports 2-player local multiplayer, offering simultaneous screen play for an engaging co-op experience. However, the multiplayer mode is available only in the local environment and requires both players to share the same screen, ensuring a fun and competitive experience. Despite some features not being fully supported due to the conversion from the original PlayStation® version, the game still delivers an enjoyable experience with its fast-paced action and strategic shooting elements.

Our Verdict
Arcade Hits: Sonic Wings Special (2010) feels outdated and lacks the polish many expect from classic games today. While the core gameplay is fun and nostalgic for fans of Japanese shoot 'em-ups, it’s hindered by its age. The visuals are charming in their retro anime style, but the gameplay can feel repetitive, and the difficulty spikes may turn off newcomers. Additionally, the Japanese language text is a major barrier for those who aren’t familiar with it, especially since there’s minimal help available for non-Japanese speakers.
The game’s lack of support for modern features, like multiplayer or controller peripherals, also hurts its overall appeal. If you’re looking for a seamless experience on the PS3 or PSP, Sonic Wings Special falls short. There are better, more accessible options out there for fans of the genre, so we can't fully recommend this one unless you have a strong nostalgic attachment to it.
