About the Game
In Subterrain, you assume the role of Dr. West, the sole apparent survivor of MPO, an underground city on Mars. You are thrust into a battle for survival where you must confront numerous challenges, including hostile creatures, limited resources, physical needs like hunger and thirst, and the constant pressure of time. The game focuses on the intense struggle to survive a catastrophic event that has left Mars in chaos, and every decision you make can mean the difference between life and death. In this hostile environment, carelessness can turn you into your own worst enemy. The game does not pause for you—time continues to push forward, and every action has lasting consequences.
Survival
Survival is at the core of Subterrain. You must constantly fight against your own body's natural needs, such as thirst, hunger, fatigue, and injury. The game's realistic mechanics ensure that even minor issues like bone fractures or blood loss can become life-threatening if not addressed. To stay alive, you must scavenge or conduct research to find medical supplies. As you explore, you must also manage vital resources like oxygen and temperature levels to avoid succumbing to the harsh Martian environment.
Combat
The surface of Mars is home to terrifying threats, and you'll need to arm yourself with both melee and ranged weapons to survive. You can customize your ranged weapons with modular parts, allowing for a variety of different combat styles. Time is a critical factor, as the infection spreading through the city will cause enemies to evolve over time—from harmless cocoons to monstrous abominations. One of your main objectives will be to defend the city's vital infrastructure, such as the generator, from attacks. Combat requires careful strategy, as you balance offense and defense in this survival nightmare.
Crafting
Crafting is an essential part of your journey. By scavenging materials from the environment, you can break down junk and creature parts to create useful components. The game's 3D printer system allows you to craft a wide array of items, such as armor, weapons, grenades, and upgrades. Additionally, the Bio Combiner lets you craft performance enhancers and survival gear to help you in your fight for survival. You can also harvest plants and ores, refine them, and use them to create materials that can be turned into new and powerful items. As you progress, research and experimentation will enable you to upgrade your gear and develop more advanced technologies, such as creating your own lightsaber or even power armor.
Exploration
Explore randomly generated sub-levels and meticulously crafted locations in Subterrain. The game's non-linear storytelling is told through logs and narrative sequences, allowing you to piece together the mysteries of the underground city. The open-world environment lets you explore the Mars colony at your own pace, visiting different districts and discovering hidden secrets. You will need to repair essential infrastructure, such as temperature and oxygen generators, to restore the colony’s habitability. As you delve deeper into the city, you'll uncover clues about the infection and work to escape the nightmare before it consumes everything.
Setting
Set in the year 2050, humanity has successfully colonized Mars, thanks to the vision of Jeff Murray. To overcome Mars' extreme radiation and temperature fluctuations, Murray created an underground city called Mars MPO. The city was designed to allow scientists and entrepreneurs to work without the constraints they faced on Earth. However, things take a dark turn when Dr. Albert West arrives at MPO at Murray's invitation. West, a scientist researching a cure for Alzheimer's disease in a desperate bid to save his wife, Jennifer, from dementia, finds his efforts tragically interrupted. After a lab accident, West is accused of murder and sentenced to prison. The game begins a year into his sentence, with a mysterious disappearance of the prison's guards. It's a week since they vanished, and Dr. West is about to uncover the terrifying reason behind their disappearance.
Will you survive the horrors lurking in the underground city of Mars? Every decision matters as you struggle to stay alive and uncover the truth behind the deadly infection. Are you ready to face the challenges of Subterrain?
Our Verdict
Subterrain offers a challenging and immersive survival experience set in the hostile environment of Mars. As Dr. West, players must manage their basic needs, fight off terrifying enemies, and explore an underground city filled with danger. The game combines resource management, combat, and exploration in a way that keeps you on edge, constantly battling the elements and your own survival instincts. Its modular crafting system and evolving enemies add depth, but it can feel repetitive after a while.
If you're a fan of survival games with a strong narrative and don't mind a bit of grinding, Subterrain is definitely worth a try. However, the game can be unforgiving, and its slow pacing might not appeal to everyone. It's a great choice for those who enjoy a high-stakes challenge and are willing to invest time in mastering its systems, but casual gamers may want to look elsewhere.
