Description
From the era of the Warring States to modern Japan, shinobi have operated in secrecy, executing missions with precision and skill. While some serve government authorities and others work for the highest bidder, every shinobi shares one common trait: exceptional combat abilities and style. Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus continues the storyline directly following the events of Senran Kagura Burst, focusing on the ongoing rivalry between the girls of Hanzō National Academy and their former adversaries from Hebijo Clandestine Girls’ Academy. Having gone underground, Hebijo’s students now form the Homura Crimson Squad, a mercenary strike team with a relentless drive for dominance.
In addition to facing their longstanding enemies, the Hanzō girls encounter a new threat in the form of Gessen Girls’ Academy. The Gessen students aim to challenge the Hanzō girls for perceived shortcomings in their shinobi abilities, adding another layer of complexity to the conflict. Meanwhile, Hebijo launches a new class with students who oppose all existing factions, determined to emerge as the final dominant shinobi squad, regardless of the chaos they leave behind. These intersecting conflicts create an intense and unpredictable battlefield, setting the scene for an all-out shinobi confrontation.
Gameplay Overview
The game offers fast-paced 3D combat with an emphasis on dynamic, high-energy battles. Players engage in intense skirmishes featuring elaborate mid-air combos and visually striking special techniques called Secret Ninja Arts. Combat is visually represented through the deterioration of each character’s outfit, creating a unique mechanic that ties damage directly to costume changes. The Windows PC version delivers the experience in high-definition at a smooth 60 frames per second, ensuring responsive and visually immersive gameplay.
Character Variety and Customization
Over 20 playable characters are available, each with distinct fighting styles, weapons, and special abilities. Players can utilize Ninja Arts during battles to enhance their combat efficiency or to trigger costume transformations, which also affect power and skill capabilities. All downloadable content from the original PlayStation(r)Vita release is included in the PC version, offering a complete roster and full range of customization options.
Story and Narrative Structure
The game’s story is presented from four different perspectives, with each rival academy taking turns in narrating events. This multi-viewpoint approach provides insight into motivations, relationships, and personal traits of each character. Original Japanese voice acting is maintained, paired with English subtitles to ensure clarity and preserve the authentic character personalities. Players experience each school’s narrative arc, which includes themes of heroism, personal struggle, and occasional nudity as part of the storytelling.
Multiplayer and Competitive Modes
The game supports up to four players in innovative multiplayer modes, creating diverse competitive experiences. Players can participate in classic Death Match battles, Strip Battles that focus on depleting opponents’ clothing, or Understorm, a fast-paced race to collect falling undergarments from the environment. These modes add strategic variety and replayability, emphasizing both skill and entertainment in multiplayer confrontations.

Our Verdict
Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus is a wild, over-the-top ninja brawler that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The combat is fast, flashy, and full of big combos, while the story gives each school its own drama and personality. Fans of anime-style action will find a lot to enjoy here.
That said, the game is very much aimed at a mature audience, with revealing outfits and suggestive humor woven into the fights. It’s fun if you’re into that style, but not for everyone.
Overall, if you want a chaotic, colorful, and energetic ninja brawler with a lot of personality, we recommend it. Just be ready for some risqué content along the way.
