Description
Saturday Morning RPG is an episodic Japanese-style role-playing game (JRPG) set in a universe heavily influenced by 1980s Saturday morning cartoons and popular culture of the era. Players assume the role of Martin "Marty" Michael Hall, a typical high school student who suddenly gains an extraordinary power. This newfound ability attracts the attention and hostility of the notorious villain Commander Hood, setting Marty on a path of adventure and conflict.
Soundtrack and Music
The game features a full original soundtrack composed by legendary musician Vince DiCola, known for his work on Transformers: The Animated Movie and Rocky IV. DiCola collaborated with Kenny Meriedeth, whose previous contributions include soundtracks for DuckTales, Power Rangers, X-Men, and more. The music complements the game’s nostalgic aesthetic and enhances the overall experience, immersing players in the 1980s-inspired world.
Episodic Gameplay
Saturday Morning RPG is structured into several episodes, each containing a self-contained story. Players have the flexibility to play any episode in any order, while retaining all stats and items across episodes. This system functions similarly to a New Game Plus mode but introduces additional complexity: small choices made in one episode can affect outcomes in subsequent episodes, providing replay value and encouraging strategic decision-making. The game currently includes five full episodes.
Combat System
The game utilizes an active turn-based combat system reminiscent of Nintendo’s Paper Mario series. Battles are turn-based, but players engage actively by defending against enemy attacks and completing reflex-based challenges to enhance their own offensive moves. This dynamic keeps players involved during combat and requires both strategy and timing to succeed.
Unique Weapons and Items
Marty channels his magical abilities through everyday objects. Players can use unconventional items to defeat enemies, such as summoning rainbow zebras with a pack of striped gum or transforming into a semi-truck using a special action figure. This inventive approach reinforces the game’s playful tone and nostalgic charm, turning ordinary objects into tools of combat.
Nostalgic Themes
Everything in Saturday Morning RPG is built around nostalgia. Marty’s powers are linked to a garish plastic notebook, while equipping scratch ‘n sniff stickers boosts character stats. The game’s world design draws inspiration from the full range of 1980s Saturday morning cartoons, ensuring that players experience a vibrant, retro-themed environment throughout their journey.
Additional Features
- Endless Battle Mode: Survive continuous waves of enemies where resource management is critical to lasting success.
- Optional Arena Battles: Face powerful opponents in extra challenges. Currently, the game includes two arena battles, with additional fights planned for free updates.
- Controller Support: Full compatibility with game controllers provides an alternative to keyboard or mouse input.
- Steam Integration: Players can earn over 70 achievements and collect 8 trading cards.
Saturday Morning RPG combines episodic storytelling, innovative turn-based combat, and a nostalgic 1980s theme. Its unique use of everyday objects as magical weapons, along with active participation in battles, creates a distinctive JRPG experience. With flexible episode order, decision-driven gameplay, and ongoing updates, the game offers both replayability and a rich, nostalgia-fueled adventure for fans of classic Saturday morning cartoons.
Our Verdict
If you're a fan of 80s cartoons and enjoy a nostalgic throwback, Saturday Morning RPG offers a fun, quirky experience. The episodic structure and unique turn-based combat system keep things fresh, allowing you to jump into any episode at any time. The humor and charm are undeniable, especially for those who grew up with the pop culture of the era. With a full soundtrack by Vince DiCola, the atmosphere is spot-on, too.
However, the game may not be for everyone. The mechanics can feel repetitive, and the reliance on nostalgia might leave some players cold, especially if you're not familiar with the references. While the battle system is engaging at first, it can quickly lose its luster for those looking for a deeper challenge. Still, if you’re in the mood for light-hearted, episodic fun, this is definitely worth a try.
