Description
Gunscape is a first-person shooter that draws inspiration from the classic FPS games that defined the genre. The game combines all the most memorable elements from past shooters into a versatile toolkit, allowing players to create, modify, and play their own levels. At its core, Gunscape functions as a first-person shooter construction kit, offering a highly flexible and creative environment for designing single-player campaigns, cooperative maps, and competitive multiplayer arenas.
Building and Customization
The game provides an intuitive block-based building interface familiar to many players, making it easy to construct unique worlds. Users can combine blocks, props, enemies, weapons, avatars, and environmental assets from multiple themed sets, allowing for complete freedom in world creation. The themes range from early FPS classics to modern stealth and war shooters, each containing specific elements such as traps, teleporters, bosses, music tracks, skyboxes, and an extensive arsenal including guns, bombs, bats, swords, flamethrowers, chainsaws, and rocket launchers. Currently, 38 weapons are planned, and each theme is carefully designed to prevent redundancy while capturing iconic elements from the genre’s history.
Edit and Play Modes
Players can jump between building and action modes at any time, testing their maps immediately or engaging in combat. Gunscape supports solo creation, split-screen co-op, and online cooperative multiplayer, enabling players to collaborate on level design or challenge friends in custom arenas. Single-player campaigns can be structured as a linear sequence of levels or as branching adventures. Co-op maps allow groups to tackle difficult challenges, while multiplayer arenas include multiple spawn points, power-ups, and various game modes such as free-for-all, team deathmatch, capture the flag, king of the hill, domination/point capture, tag, and infection variants. Additional modes may include race-to-the-finish maps, competitive trap courses, or custom scoring systems like monster hunting or multiplayer dinosaur safaris.
World Sharing
Gunscape features a global map sharing system, allowing users to upload their creations for others to play. The game includes a map browser with filtering and voting options, providing full access to all publicly shared levels regardless of the theme packs used. Players can explore content created by others, ensuring that there is a constant stream of fresh levels to experience. The developers provide demo maps to showcase the potential of the game’s creative system, and new content is regularly added to inspire players and highlight the flexibility of the building toolkit.
Editions
Standard Edition
The Standard Edition includes all core game themes, featuring blocks, props, enemies, avatars, and weapons from Bathyscape, Bierenstein, Final Fortress, Electro, Relay, Too Rockin’, Siegecraft, Orifice, and Tremor. This edition provides access to the essential assets needed for full gameplay and creative building.
Gold Edition
The Gold Edition offers access to all current and future content. In addition to Standard Edition assets, it includes Seasonal, Alienware, and Gold theme packs, as well as the Gunscape Original Soundtrack DLC. Gold Edition purchasers will also receive the first extra DLC, the Seismic pack, free of charge when it releases in Q2 2016.
World-Building Philosophy
Gunscape emphasizes accessibility for all players. Drawing inspiration from the level editors of early FPS games like Doom and Build engine titles, the game is designed so that beginners can quickly create engaging maps while experienced players can craft complex, highly detailed worlds. The underlying philosophy focuses on pure gameplay fun, allowing iterative testing and adjustment to produce the best possible player experiences.
Cross-Platform and Multiplayer Features
The game supports cross-platform multiplayer where applicable, enabling cooperative and competitive play between players on different devices. Gunscape offers eight persistent multiplayer modes, ensuring varied gameplay experiences and opportunities for both casual and competitive players. Its combination of building tools, action-oriented gameplay, and community sharing makes it a versatile sandbox for FPS enthusiasts.
Overall, Gunscape (2016) merges creative freedom with classic FPS mechanics, providing a comprehensive platform for players to design, play, and share their own action-packed experiences. Whether focusing on building unique levels, exploring community maps, or engaging in intense multiplayer battles, the game caters to a wide range of playstyles and offers continuous content growth.
Our Verdict
Gunscape is a blast from the past with a fresh twist. It mixes classic first-person shooter action with creative world-building tools that are easy to use. You can make your own maps, play solo, team up with friends, or jump straight into online battles. The variety of weapons, enemies, and themes keeps things exciting, and the game encourages creativity without being overwhelming.
The multiplayer experience is strong, with lots of modes to try and maps to explore, both official and player-made. Sharing and playing community-created content adds almost endless replay value. Even if you’re not into building, the game still delivers fast-paced shooting fun that feels true to classic FPS games.
We recommend Gunscape. It’s fun, flexible, and full of potential, whether you’re a builder, a shooter, or both. A solid pick for anyone who loves action with a creative edge.
