Description
rFactor, developed by Image Space Incorporated, is a highly realistic and fully customizable racing simulation that combines advanced physics, immersive graphics, and extensive multiplayer capabilities. The game is designed to deliver an authentic driving experience, allowing players to engage in a wide variety of racing formats, from road courses to high-banked speedways, all while maintaining a focus on detailed vehicle dynamics and realism.
Core Features
The simulation emphasizes precision in vehicle behavior through a physics engine with 15 degrees of freedom. It incorporates advanced tire modeling, engine boost adjustments, complex aerodynamics, detailed cockpit vibrations, and specific head physics to create a highly accurate representation of real-world racing conditions. The engine also models a 4-link rear suspension system and includes a unique track-specific terrain data file system to enhance performance accuracy for every circuit.
Graphics and Sound
rFactor utilizes a DirectX 9 graphics engine that supports real-time day and night transitions, complete with projected headlights for nighttime driving. Players can fine-tune visual and audio experiences, including adjusting seat position, mirrors, apex view via the Look Ahead slider, and modifying the volume ratio between player and AI opponents. The simulation also features an updated sound engine that dynamically changes engine noises according to vehicle performance upgrades, providing a fully immersive audio experience.
Gameplay Mechanics
The game offers a career mode where vehicle upgrades impact appearance, sound, and performance. AI opponents can be customized in type, strength, and aggression. Races can be organized by laps, time, or a combination of both. An in-depth vehicle economy tracks mileage and upgrades, while ambient and track temperatures dynamically change throughout the race. Controls are fully configurable, and multiple racing series with vehicle and circuit filters are supported.
Camera and Replay System
rFactor includes a sophisticated camera and replay system. Players can move freely around the track, rewind gameplay, and access multiple camera angles, including the exclusive ISI Swingman view. Spectator mode is fully integrated, and replays can be edited with clip splicing, duplication, deletion, and custom camera movements. Replays can also be exported to AVI files with customizable compression and resolution settings.
Multiplayer Capabilities
The multiplayer engine has been rebuilt to provide comprehensive features, including built-in race statistics with web-based RaceCast reporting, friends lists, server bookmarks, and native voting systems. Dedicated servers support single-click setup, AI additions, IRC chat, and player boot/ban lists. Security measures are included to minimize cheating and ensure fair gameplay for all participants.
Open Architecture and Modding
rFactor is designed with an open architecture that extensively supports modding. Players can easily add new vehicles, tracks, liveries, and configure custom league schedules. Rules for various types of racing can be defined, and controllers are fully customizable. The simulation supports multiple languages and provides the ability to completely modify game content, enabling a continually evolving racing environment created by the community.
