Description
At the outermost boundary of the known universe, the research vessel Xanadu orbits an enigmatic planet, its systems still operational despite months of silence from its crew. A solitary operative is dispatched to awaken the dormant ship and navigate it safely back to Earth. Spirits of Xanadu is an atmospheric exploration experience situated aboard an abandoned starship, set within an alternate version of the 1980s. The game draws on the influence of classic science fiction cinema, literature, and interactive titles to deliver an environment that is highly immersive, interactive, and meticulously detailed, integrating both puzzle-solving and first-person shooter mechanics to advance a complex narrative.
Investigate and Uncover
Players are tasked with discovering the events that transpired on the Xanadu. Fully voiced audiologs, along with various documents, emails, and reports, reveal the stories of the crew and provide critical context. Piecing together these elements allows the player to reconstruct the sequence of events, uncovering the mysteries surrounding the ship and its mission. Every interaction contributes to a deeper understanding of the narrative, encouraging careful observation and thorough exploration.
Multiple Endings Based on Choices
The outcome of the game is influenced by the decisions players make during their investigation. There are three distinct endings, each reflecting the conclusions drawn from the evidence collected aboard the ship. Player choices determine the fate of the Xanadu, adding a meaningful consequence to the exploration and discovery process.
Challenging and Unassisted Exploration
The game emphasizes autonomy and problem-solving without external guidance. The primary objective is to return the Xanadu to Earth, but players must navigate without maps, markers, or direct instructions. The ship has been sabotaged, and players start their mission armed only with a flashlight and a message from superiors, requiring careful navigation, logical reasoning, and attention to environmental clues to progress.
Engage in Tactical Combat
Players encounter the ship's hostile robotic security system, requiring strategic first-person shooter engagement to survive. The combat system integrates seamlessly with the exploration, demanding both stealth and quick reflexes. Balancing evasion and combat challenges adds intensity to the journey through the abandoned vessel.
Fully Interactive Ship Environment
The Xanadu is designed for complete interaction. Inspired by immersive classics such as Deus Ex and System Shock 2, players can examine every drawer, access every terminal, and read all available documents. Environmental interactivity extends to unexpected elements, such as the ability to operate ship facilities, contributing to the sense of a living, functional vessel and enhancing engagement with the narrative.
Optional Non-Combat Exploration
For players who prefer to focus on narrative and problem-solving over combat, the game offers a “Peaceful” mode. In this setting, hostile robots become non-aggressive, allowing uninterrupted exploration, puzzle-solving, and story immersion. This mode provides a more relaxed experience, emphasizing investigation and discovery without the pressure of combat.
