Description
In honor of the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, TIME and LIFE VR present an immersive virtual reality experience that transports users back to that pivotal moment in history. This unique historical project is presented in three distinct acts, each offering a different perspective on the events of December 7, 1941. The story is narrated through the eyes of Lt. James Downing, a man who, at the age of 103, is the second-oldest living American veteran to have experienced that fateful day firsthand.
Downing, who served as the postmaster of the USS West Virginia during the attack, took on the responsibility of notifying the families of those who had either perished or were injured in the assault. His letters, which he personally wrote to each family, serve as the emotional backbone of this immersive experience, guiding users through his poignant journey as they explore the impact of the attack on both a personal and national level.
The first act of the experience takes place in a typical American home in 1941, where Downing reflects on how the looming threat of war altered the lives of citizens across the United States. Users get a sense of the unease and uncertainty that gripped the country as the conflict in Europe and the Pacific intensified, and the world teetered on the brink of global war. This act allows viewers to experience the atmosphere of pre-attack America through the eyes of someone who lived through it, offering a personal and humanized lens on the period.
The second act moves to Pearl Harbor itself, where the devastation of the attack is fully realized. Through Downing’s words and the powerful imagery of the time, users are taken to the heart of the destruction. The scale of the damage is presented with a level of detail that brings the chaos of the bombing to life. As the attack unfolds, users witness the destruction of ships, the devastation of military infrastructure, and the loss of life. The experience highlights the bravery of the individuals who fought back against the attackers, capturing the chaos, the bravery, and the sorrow of that unforgettable day.
Finally, the third act brings the user into the present day, where Downing reflects on the lasting impact of that day on his life. Having survived the attack, Downing offers a deeply personal perspective on the emotional scars that continue to linger even after 75 years. This segment serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of those who lived through the attack, as well as the enduring legacy of Pearl Harbor in shaping both American history and the world’s trajectory in the aftermath of World War II.
Throughout the entire experience, users interact with highly detailed virtual versions of historical artifacts from the time, enhancing their immersion into the story. These objects, coupled with iconic photographs and archival videos, provide an authentic and intimate glimpse into one of the most defining moments in American history. The user is not just an observer, but an active participant in uncovering the story of December 7, 1941, by engaging with the artifacts and media that shaped the narrative.
This virtual reality experience was created in collaboration with the World War II Museum and the Library of Congress, who contributed their expertise, invaluable artifacts, and primary sources to ensure historical accuracy. Renowned historian Craig Nelson served as the historical advisor for the project, providing an authoritative perspective on the events. The experience was produced by Deluxe VR in partnership with HTC and AMD, bringing cutting-edge technology to a historical narrative that educates and immerses viewers in the past.
Designed to be suitable for audiences of all ages, this VR experience offers a comprehensive and moving representation of one of the most significant days in American history. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a student, or simply curious about the events of Pearl Harbor, this experience provides an engaging, educational, and emotional journey through time.
