Description
Red Trigger is a unique fusion of a First Person Shooter (FPS) and a Puzzle game that challenges players to think strategically while engaging in dynamic gameplay. In this experience, the player assumes the role of a virus named Red Trigger, navigating through and attempting to compromise a complex computer system.
Gameplay Mechanics
The core gameplay revolves around the manipulation of red blocks. Players can shoot these blocks to either expand or retract them. However, only three blocks can be expanded simultaneously, requiring careful energy management and thoughtful planning. These red blocks serve multiple functions throughout the game:
- Creating platforms to reach otherwise inaccessible areas.
- Blocking harmful lasers that obstruct progression.
- Holding doors open to allow passage through locked areas.
- Powering various systems within the digital environment.
- Propelling the player to traverse gaps or obstacles.
The strategic versatility of these blocks encourages experimentation and problem-solving, making every level a test of both skill and resource management.
Game Duration
The game can be completed in approximately 40 minutes to over an hour, depending on the player's approach and proficiency with the mechanics. Its design focuses on concise yet engaging levels, ensuring a compact and rewarding experience without unnecessary filler.
Development Background
Red Trigger was created as a final project at NAD University in Montreal using Unreal Engine 4. The development process was intensive, with the developer working seven days a week for 15 weeks to bring the concept to life. This dedication is reflected in the polished mechanics, responsive controls, and the thoughtful integration of puzzle elements within the FPS framework.
Awards and Recognition
The game received critical recognition, winning the "Choice of the Industry" award at ImagiNAD in May 2016, highlighting its innovation and quality among peers in the academic and gaming community.
Sound and Presentation
The auditory experience is supported by a soundtrack specifically designed to complement the gameplay, enhancing immersion and emphasizing the tension and pace of each level. The sound design, created by Gabriel Essiambre, integrates seamlessly with the interactive elements, providing auditory feedback for the player’s actions and the environment’s responses.
