Description
Astro Lords: Oort Cloud is an engaging strategy game where players take on the role of an Astro Lord, navigating the vastness of the Oort Cloud. In this game, each player starts with an asteroid base, which serves as their central hub for resource extraction and manufacturing. The asteroid base is essential for producing the ammunition and spare parts required for the player's spacecraft. This base is a player’s primary stronghold, and although other players may attempt to raid it, they cannot capture it, ensuring your base remains secure from permanent takeover.
As players progress, they can expand their territory by capturing up to five additional asteroids. These newly acquired asteroids are used for further resource extraction, boosting the player's production capabilities. However, expansion comes with its risks, as other players may attempt to reclaim the asteroids you have captured. It’s essential to maintain constant vigilance to protect your assets and prevent hostile Astro Lords from recapturing them.
The game takes place within the Oort Cloud, an area filled with numerous asteroids and celestial bodies. Players can control the movements of their asteroid bases once they acquire the necessary skills, providing a dynamic and evolving gameplay experience. This mechanic adds depth to the game, as players can strategically navigate through space, positioning their base for optimal resource extraction or defense against potential threats.
For those who enjoy action-packed, large-scale battles, Astro Lords: Oort Cloud features an exciting Arena mode. Here, players can engage in real-time combat against alien races (controlled by AI) or challenge other Astro Lords in fierce battles. The Arena provides a thrilling opportunity for mass combat enthusiasts, where players can actively participate rather than simply waiting for their base's construction projects to finish. The real-time nature of the Arena battles makes them more immersive and interactive, providing players with immediate, engaging action.
Astro Lords: Oort Cloud offers complete freedom of action, allowing players to make their own decisions, forge alliances, or wage war against rival Lords. Social interaction plays a vital role in the game, as players can collaborate, negotiate, or engage in hostile confrontations. With its combination of strategic resource management, base defense, and real-time space combat, Astro Lords: Oort Cloud provides a comprehensive gaming experience where you can test your skills, make alliances, and rise to the top as a powerful Astro Lord.
Victory in this game is determined by your ability to manage resources, defend your territory, and engage in strategic battles. The game encourages players to think critically and act decisively, with every choice potentially leading to different outcomes. Whether you prefer to focus on building up your asteroid empire or engage in fierce space battles, Astro Lords: Oort Cloud offers a rich and varied gameplay experience that caters to a wide range of players.
The game’s stunning art style, which earned it the "Best Art" award at the Indie Game Cup 2015, enhances the overall experience. The visual design of the game, combined with its immersive gameplay mechanics, draws players into the vast and mysterious Oort Cloud. The combination of strategy, exploration, and combat ensures that no two sessions are ever the same, keeping players engaged and invested in the game world for hours on end.
Our Verdict
Astro Lords: Oort Cloud offers a unique blend of strategy and real-time combat, with a focus on building and defending your base in the Oort Cloud. The game’s art style is impressive, and its open-world elements provide a lot of freedom in how you play. However, the grind for resources can feel repetitive, and while the real-time battles are fun, they can be daunting for new players.
If you're a fan of strategy games with base building and PvP combat, this could be a fun experience. But be prepared for a learning curve and potential downtime between actions. It's a solid pick for those who enjoy space-themed strategy games, but it may not be for everyone.
