Description
Overview
Ring Runner: Flight of the Sages blends intense space combat with deep role-playing game mechanics, offering players a combination of fast-paced action and strategic customization. The game features a story-driven campaign spanning approximately 30 hours, inspired by a companion science fiction novel, and provides additional replayability through six unique scenarios playable solo, cooperatively, or competitively in both local and online multiplayer settings. Players can select from 60 fully customizable ship hulls, each serving as a framework for over 400 distinct skills, enabling a wide variety of play styles. Procedural generation of level layouts, backgrounds, and enemy AI ensures virtually limitless challenges throughout the game.
Story
In the narrative, the protagonist awakens from non-consensual brain surgery to discover that critical regions of their memory have been erased. These sections have been replaced by Nero, a neuro-HUD with an unusual penchant for peanut butter, who guides the player across the interstellar superhighways known as The Rings. Throughout this journey, players encounter hazardous trench runs, combat gladiators, and rival trash moguls, gradually realizing that they are a Sage—a being capable of altering the physical laws of the universe with their mind.
However, a threat looms: The Extinguishers. Acting under the Consortium of the Inner Rings, they target all Sages for extermination, triggering a conflict that spans entire galaxies. The player’s choices and survival directly influence the outcome of this cosmic war, as they strive to uncover their own identity and wield the extraordinary powers of a Sage.

Critical Reception
The game has been praised for its innovative approach and indie production quality. Reviews highlight its solid writing, compelling gameplay, and ambitious scale. For instance, Indiestatik commended its overall fun and solid graphics, while Rock, Paper, Shotgun recognized the game’s ambition to expand the twin-stick shooter genre. GiantBomb noted the game’s endearing and ambitious nature, emphasizing its unique blend of action and RPG mechanics.
Our Verdict
Ring Runner: Flight of the Sages presents an interesting blend of space combat and RPG elements, but unfortunately, it falls short in execution. The story, while ambitious, is often confusing and fails to deliver a truly immersive experience. Despite offering a variety of customizable ships and abilities, the gameplay can quickly become repetitive and feels more like a grind than an exciting space adventure. The multiplayer features, although promising, are bogged down by technical issues and lack of player engagement.
While the game does have some unique ideas, like procedurally generated levels and mini-games, they don't make up for its shortcomings. If you're looking for a solid space combat RPG, there are better alternatives out there. Skip this one unless you’re really desperate for a space-themed indie game.
