Description
The Big Space Mess is an out-of-this-world side-scrolling shooter game that offers an epic and unpredictable adventure. The plot centers around a Brain Monster from Space, who has lofty ambitions of becoming a notorious villain recognized across the galaxy. His ultimate goal is to impress his legendary father, a famous monster himself, by committing all kinds of evil acts. The Brain Monster sets his plans in motion by employing an array of monstrous tools inherited from his father, including gigantic worms, evil robots, and other alien army gadgets. His mission includes kidnapping defenseless civilians, robbing banks, destroying planets, and even dabbling in politics. Along the way, the Brain Monster often displays his ignorance of local wildlife, causing hilarious and chaotic moments, such as disguising a drone as a fish or lobster, and sending it off with the command: “Fly, my little turtle!”
The game kicks off when the Brain Monster kidnaps Babe, the girlfriend of Waldisglédson, a pizza delivery guy. In response, Waldisglédson joins a special military force to track down the Brain Monster and rescue his beloved Babe. Waldisglédson embarks on an adventurous journey through space, facing off against various creatures, while also encountering unexpected allies. The player takes control of Waldisglédson and other characters, who band together to stop the Brain Monster’s nefarious plans.
Game Mechanics
The Big Space Mess is a side-scrolling shooter with a diverse set of mechanics designed to keep players engaged. The game features one tutorial stage, eight main stages, and two optional stages for each of the main levels. In total, there are 27 stages for the player to navigate, each offering a unique challenge. Players will also face a stage that introduces a different set of mechanics, featuring a puzzle-like structure divided into nine interconnected parts, which adds a layer of complexity to the game.
Throughout the game, the player has access to four distinct weapons for each of the 16 available characters. These weapons include a starting weapon, three unlockable weapons, and twelve hidden ones that require keen observation to discover. Every weapon also comes with a unique special ability, which makes exploring and unlocking new characters a rewarding experience. Hidden collectibles can also be found scattered throughout the stages, and there are 100 medals to be earned based on the player’s skill and performance. The instructions on how to obtain these medals can be accessed through the stage select menu.
Controls and Gameplay
The controls in The Big Space Mess are straightforward and easy to master. Players select options using the mouse and the ENTER key. Movement is handled with the arrow keys, and the spacebar is used for attacking. During gameplay, if the player wishes to abort the current mission, they can press the ENTER key to return to the stage select screen. The game encourages exploration, as players must find each of the 16 playable characters hidden throughout the stages.
To unlock these characters, players must pay close attention to the clues provided by the four main characters. Each main character will provide a small hint about where their three friends can be found within the stages. However, these characters cannot find the friends of other main characters. To help the friends, the player must find two specific gifts that each character requests. These gifts are hidden within the stages, and the player must first locate the friend who asks for them in order to collect the items. Once both gifts have been obtained, the player can return to the friend’s location and deliver them to unlock a new character for the roster.
Subtitles and Special Features
The game provides subtitle options in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, which can be selected at the beginning of the game. A fun little trick is available for those who want to start with extra power and unlock all content right from the start. By holding the spacebar when the four main characters and the start menu appear on the screen, a flash of light will be seen. From there, players can click on "New Game," and they will begin with full power, infinite lives, ammo, and armor. Additionally, every stage and character will be unlocked, and many of the game’s medals will already be collected.
Overall, The Big Space Mess offers a unique blend of action, humor, and strategic gameplay. It challenges players to explore and discover hidden secrets while fighting to thwart the Brain Monster's intergalactic plans. Whether you’re battling evil robots, solving puzzles, or collecting medals, the game offers a rich and engaging experience that keeps players on their toes.
