Description
After spending a quiet day in your apartment, idly considering what to watch on television, your attention is drawn to a formal letter that recently arrived in the mail. Curiosity prompts you to open it, setting in motion a chain of events that will lead you far beyond the comfort of your home. The Unwelcomed is a virtual reality escape-the-room experience, designed to immerse players in a series of puzzles and interactive challenges, inspired by the foundational game Crimson Room.
Premise
The game begins with an invitation to visit the mansion of your late uncle, supposedly to inherit his estate. Upon arrival, however, it becomes evident that leaving will not be simple. The mansion is filled with a variety of intricate puzzles and hidden mechanisms, requiring careful observation and logical thinking. Players must navigate through rooms, inspect objects, and combine items to progress, creating a tense and engaging escape-room scenario.
Gameplay Mechanics
The Unwelcomed emphasizes detailed interaction with the environment. Every room contains objects that can be examined, manipulated, and used to solve puzzles. Interaction is primarily conducted using virtual reality controllers, but keyboard and mouse options are available, albeit with limited functionality.
Keyboard and Mouse Controls
- E – Use/Interact: This key activates objects that can be opened, including doors, drawers, and containers. Some interactions require combining items, such as using keys on locked doors.
- Right Click – Pick Up Object: Target any object that can be picked up and hold the right mouse button to grab it.
- Mouse Wheel +/-: When holding an object, use the mouse wheel to move it closer or further away, adjusting its position relative to the player.
- Alt – Rotate Object: Holding the Alt key while moving the mouse allows you to rotate objects in space, providing different angles for inspection.
- F – Flashlight Toggle: Once a flashlight is obtained, pressing F switches it on or off to illuminate dark areas.
- Left Shift – Crouch: Press and hold Left Shift to crouch, allowing access to lower areas and hidden spaces.
Puzzle Design
The puzzles in The Unwelcomed are designed to test memory, observation, and problem-solving skills. Objects in each room are not only decorative but integral to solving challenges. Some items must be combined or manipulated in specific ways, requiring careful attention to detail. The mansion itself serves as a labyrinth, with each room connected to the next through clever mechanisms and hidden pathways.
Atmosphere and Experience
Virtual reality enhances the sense of presence and immersion, making every discovery and solved puzzle feel immediate and consequential. The mansion’s interior is meticulously designed, offering visual and interactive cues that guide the player while maintaining a sense of mystery and tension. Sound design complements the visual elements, reinforcing the suspenseful and sometimes eerie atmosphere.
System Requirements and Limitations
Players using keyboard and mouse should note that key mapping customization is currently non-functional. The provided default bindings allow for interaction, movement, and manipulation of objects, but VR controllers remain the optimal method for fully experiencing the game’s interactive depth.
Summary
The Unwelcomed delivers a focused escape-room experience within a virtual reality environment. From the initial curiosity sparked by a simple letter to the complex puzzles inside a sprawling mansion, every element is designed to engage players in careful observation, strategic thinking, and methodical problem-solving. The game preserves the essence of classic EtR gameplay while leveraging VR to create an immersive, interactive, and suspenseful journey through a mysterious inheritance and the challenges it conceals.
Our Verdict
Verdict: Not Recommended
The Unwelcomed offers an interesting premise with its escape-the-room gameplay, set in a creepy mansion filled with mystery. However, the game falls short due to its lack of polish. The key mapping issues for keyboard and mouse users are frustrating, making basic interactions awkward. The VR experience, though inspired by classics, feels underdeveloped, and the overall atmosphere doesn't quite deliver the tension or engagement you'd expect from a game of this genre.
While the concept has potential, the technical problems and unrefined mechanics hold it back from being enjoyable. If you’re looking for a truly immersive and well-executed escape-the-room experience, there are better options out there. For now, The Unwelcomed is not worth your time.
