Description
NEO Scavenger is a survival game set in a harsh post-apocalyptic world where players must endure long enough to rediscover their identity. Each turn demands careful choices regarding movement, scavenging for resources, and handling encounters with both creatures and other survivors. Survival depends on managing hunger, thirst, fatigue, and the effects of cold temperatures, while making strategic decisions based on your abilities and knowledge.
Gameplay Mechanics
NEO Scavenger combines turn-based strategy with deep survival simulation. Players can take their time to decide actions, save progress, and resume later. The game is designed around a single difficulty mode: permadeath. If the player dies, the save file is permanently deleted, emphasizing the importance of every choice.
Unlike traditional RPGs, the game does not rely on experience points or leveling up. Progression comes from mastering gameplay mechanics, applying strengths efficiently, and learning from past mistakes. The game world features semi-randomized elements including the layout of ruins, creature locations, weather patterns, and certain quest paths, providing unique experiences in each playthrough.
World and Setting
The game takes place in a near-future, post-apocalyptic version of Michigan, incorporating local cryptids and folklore. Players can either pursue the story, searching for clues about their identity and the forces hunting them, or explore freely, testing survival skills against environmental and human threats. The hex-based map includes diverse terrains such as forests, hills, plains, and ruins, where line-of-sight, elevation, and daylight all impact gameplay.
Character Customization
Players choose abilities and flaws before starting a new game, unlocking unique combinations that influence survival strategies and quest paths. This customization affects interactions, crafting options, combat approaches, and available story branches.
Combat and Survival
Combat is detailed and tactical, offering actions like "Tackle," "Lure," "Kick While Down," "Demand Surrender," and "Threaten." Creature AI includes realistic wound simulation, infection risks, bleeding, and pain effects. Survival mechanics track hunger, thirst, fatigue, disease, intoxication, and hypothermia. Players manage a complex inventory system with item slots, encumbrance considerations, and containers for organized storage.
Resource Gathering and Crafting
NEO Scavenger provides an extensive crafting system allowing players to combine items creatively. For example, a rifle scope can be constructed from part of a binocular, or a makeshift noise trap can be created from a pill bottle and pebbles. Foraging for edible plants and water is crucial, and skills can determine what is safe to consume. Hunting and trapping mechanics allow players to secure food and materials from both small and large animals.
Exploration and Interaction
Tracking and hiding play important roles in map navigation and encounters. Creatures leave footprints and traces that can be followed or avoided. Players can attempt to hide while moving or during encounters, and hacking skills enable access to scavenged laptops, smartphones, and tablets to gather data or discover secrets. The game also features a dynamic weather system that reflects autumn conditions, including temperature changes, rainfall, and snow in extended play.
Community and Extras
The game offers a haunting soundtrack composed by Josh Culler, creating an atmosphere of isolation and tension. Players can explore Detroit as one of the remaining safe havens, where supplies, medical care, and clues are available within a cyberpunk-inspired environment. Additional collectible features include trading cards, badges, emoticons, and profile backgrounds, enhancing engagement outside of the core survival gameplay.
