Description
Deep beneath the surface of the world, a malevolent force is awakening. The ancient protective sigils that have long safeguarded the land are beginning to fail, causing the legendary Hashtag Dungeons to reopen. Players are presented with a choice: venture into these perilous dungeons to confront the dark horrors that reside within, or align with the sinister powers themselves and master the art of dungeon creation as a Dungeon Master.
Gameplay Overview
Hashtag Dungeon offers challenging gameplay that draws inspiration from iconic titles such as the classic Legend of Zelda and The Binding of Isaac. Players must navigate treacherous traps, confront aggressive monsters, and solve complex challenges in order to survive. Every element within the dungeon—from enemies to traps, treasures, and room layouts—requires careful strategy and quick reflexes, ensuring that each dungeon expedition tests skill and decision-making to the fullest.
Creative Player Collaboration
One of the defining features of Hashtag Dungeon is its innovative approach to player-generated content. Every dungeon in the game is created and shared by the community through Twitter. The in-game Dungeon Master editor empowers players to design unique rooms, place traps, introduce enemies, and hide treasures. This collaborative system ensures a constantly evolving experience, with new dungeons appearing as players contribute their own designs and challenge others to overcome them.
Character Variety
The game includes six distinct playable characters, each offering unique gameplay styles and tactical advantages:
- The Magician: Utilizes powerful spells to overcome enemies and manipulate the dungeon environment.
- The Paladin: Excels in defense and melee combat, capable of enduring prolonged battles.
- The Blood Mage: Sacrifices health to unleash devastating attacks, balancing risk and reward.
- The Ninja: Specializes in agility and stealth, able to navigate traps and enemies with speed and precision.
- The Huntress: Expert in ranged attacks and tracking enemies, offering tactical control over combat situations.
- The Robot: Combines resilience with unique mechanical abilities, providing versatile options for dungeon exploration.
Technical Innovation
Hashtag Dungeon was developed as an experimental project to explore the potential of using Twitter as a platform to store and distribute game levels. This approach allows for seamless sharing of player-created content and promotes an interconnected community where creativity drives the gameplay experience. The game serves both as an entertainment product and as a practical demonstration of integrating social media platforms into interactive game design.
Development and Acknowledgements
The game was created as part of a third-year dissertation at The University of Lincoln. Special recognition is given to Dr. Patrick Dickinson, Dr. Ben Kirman, Dr. Kathrin Gerling, Dr. John Shearer, and Dr. Oliver Szymanezyk for their guidance and support during the development process. Additional contributions include Robin French for work on the Steam trading cards, Barney Oram for sound design, Alex Saye for enemy design, and Liz Rainsberry for musical compositions, all of which enriched the game’s immersive experience.
Our Verdict
Verdict: Hashtag Dungeon offers an intriguing concept with its player-driven dungeon design, allowing you to create and share levels via Twitter. If you're a fan of retro-inspired gameplay like The Binding of Isaac, you'll enjoy the challenge of navigating tricky traps and defeating monsters. The six unlockable characters each bring their own unique playstyle, giving you plenty of reasons to keep coming back.
However, the novelty of the Twitter integration might not be for everyone, and the game can feel repetitive after a while. While it’s creative and offers a lot of content through player contributions, the lack of polish and the somewhat niche appeal may limit its long-term appeal. Overall, if you're into experimental games and enjoy a challenge, give it a shot—but don't expect a groundbreaking experience.
