Description
Defense of Castle Chilly is a Virtual Reality game designed with full room-scale support, allowing players to physically move through the game environment. It combines elements of adventure and defense, challenging players to defend their castle using both archery and magic. The game emphasizes skill, strategy, and intuition, offering a world full of hidden secrets to discover and master.
Gameplay Mechanics
The game features advanced bow and arrow mechanics beyond standard VR archery shooters. Players must manage quivers, restock arrows, and learn advanced techniques such as speed-loading, enchanting, and other hidden strategies. Adventure mode frequently takes players outside the castle walls, introducing unique combat situations, puzzles, and various challenges. Each episode in the adventure mode adds new content and unlocks minigames for extended replayability. Players encounter large-scale battles, boss fights, and opportunities to explore castle secrets while solving complex scenarios.
Game Modes
Early Access and Chapters
Currently, Chapter 1 Episodes 1 and 2 are available, with a preview of Chapter 2 included in early access. Players can experience story-driven gameplay and prepare for upcoming content as development continues.
Endless Mode
Endless mode pits players against waves of goblin attacks that progressively increase in difficulty. Between waves, players can explore the castle interior, resupply, and solve puzzles. Items and spells found within the castle vary slightly each session, providing opportunities to enhance abilities. Enemies range from basic grunts to sharpshooters and battering rams, with difficulty escalating as waves continue. Death ends the session, while a breached castle gate forces players to retreat to defend the throne in the 'Last Stand' minigame. A global leaderboard tracks high scores, challenging players to reach the top ten.
Minigames
The game includes multiple minigames that offer unique gameplay experiences and high score challenges. Additional minigames are planned as development progresses.
Last Stand
This minigame activates when the castle is breached. Players must defend the throne without rest or retreat, facing overwhelming waves of enemies. Survival depends entirely on skill and strategy.
Deer Hunt
Deer Hunt provides a break from combat, focusing on precision and patience. Players start with 15 arrows, earning more for accuracy, and the final score is based on the number of successful hits.
PC Overlord / Local Versus
Local Versus allows a second player to join as a support character, a flying Fairy who casts spells to assist the VR player. In the "PC Overlord" mode, the second player commands the goblin army, controlling unit deployment, strategic attacks, and spells. This mode challenges the VR player to survive against a bird’s-eye strategic opponent, testing reflexes and planning skills.
Puzzles and Exploration
Adventure mode requires players to solve puzzles to progress. Puzzles are physically based and require observation and critical thinking rather than on-screen instructions. Endless mode also features hidden rooms and secret puzzles to discover, offering additional layers of challenge and reward.
Virtual Reality Features
Castle Chilly is built for 100% room-scale VR experiences, eliminating teleportation mechanics. Players move naturally using their own feet to traverse the castle and battlefield. Magic portals, staircases, elevators, and platforms provide access to new areas. The virtual environment adjusts to the player’s real-world room dimensions, meaning gameplay experiences may differ between players depending on available space.
Play Styles
Arcade Mode
Recommended for new players, this mode provides a back quiver with unlimited arrows, allowing focus on action without managing resources. The mechanics are simpler, resembling traditional archery games.
Classic Mode
Classic mode emphasizes advanced archery techniques, requiring players to manage both hip and back quivers. Proper arrow management allows for speed-shooting, spell stacking, and the use of improved arrows found throughout the game. This mode is challenging and encourages players to discover undocumented techniques and secret spells independently.
Defense of Castle Chilly offers a detailed, skill-focused VR experience that integrates combat, exploration, puzzle-solving, and strategic play, all designed to fully utilize room-scale virtual reality capabilities.
Our Verdict
Defense of Castle Chilly (2016) presents an intriguing concept with its room-scale VR mechanics, but it falls short in a few key areas. The gameplay, while offering challenging archery and magic mechanics, lacks polish and depth, leaving the experience feeling repetitive. The lack of clear instructions and the steep learning curve might frustrate many players, especially those new to VR or expecting smoother gameplay. Although the puzzles and exploration have potential, they often feel more like a chore than an engaging challenge.
While the game's unique approach to movement and combat is worth noting, the early access content is too limited, and the constant difficulty spikes make it hard to enjoy for long periods. The endless mode and minigames could offer more replayability, but they are unlikely to keep players coming back due to their limited variation. Overall, unless you’re a die-hard VR enthusiast who enjoys exploring unfinished games, it's better to wait for more development before investing time and money into this title.
